Our Story

Established in 2016, Mother's Heart Uganda (MHU) stands as a beacon of hope for the residents of the remote Mutoto community in Mbale. Its inception was rooted in the alarming maternal and child mortality rates in Uganda, where 336 out of every 100,000 live births resulted in maternal deaths. MHU aims to combat these statistics by promoting safe motherhood, enhancing community empowerment, and emphasizing formal education.

Meet Jeremiah

MHU was founded by Mbulamani Jeremiah who was born and raised in Mutoto, a small province in Uganda. He first hand witnessed the challenges his community were facing and after doing his master’s degree, Jeremiah returned to give back and actively work on tackling those issues. His vision with MHU in his own words is that “every life counts and every person deserves a better life”, aligning with the objectives of empowerment. Further, Jeremiah specified that MHU’s concrete goals are to reduce maternal child mortality in his community to below 20% within the next 5 years and increase the percentage of children going to school to over 30% within the next 10 years.

Working towards these goals, MHU’s operations are based on 3 core values: transparency, empowerment and integrity. Jeremiah often emphasizes the importance of empowerment, as he believes that when you empower people with skills and knowledge, you give them the tools to improve their livelihood and create a positive impact for the community. Moreover, Jeremiah wants to lead his NGO as a role model, fostering an atmosphere of transparency and integrity.

Our Five Core Pillars

01

SAFE MOTHERHOOD

By addressing the challenges women face, e.g. long distances to healthcare facilities, MHU emphasizes the importance of accessible antenatal care and safe deliveries

02

FORMAL
EDUCATION

Recognizing education as a transformative tool, MHU instituted the Golden Hill Nursery and Primary School, which currently educates 439 children, a significant portion of the community's young people.

03

NUTRITION AND HYGIENE

By ensuring that the community maintains good health and hygiene standards, MHU attempts to mitigate the risk factors associated with diseases and infections.

04

REHABILITATION OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

MHU focuses on rehabilitating and supporting children with disabilities, ensuring equal opportunities.

05

HIV / AIDS awareness

The alarming prevalence of HIV/AIDS, especially among women, prompted MHU to engage in active awareness campaigns, including health meetings and educational discussions to prevent new infections and reduce HIV/AIDS-related deaths.
